Many of the International exhibitions held in othernations are supported by government subsidy. Usuallysuch subsidy consists of a special stamp issued to com-memorate the exhibition the proceeds from the sale ofwhich are used for the exhibition.
In the United States the great International exhibi-tions are held without benefit of government subsidy. Our Post Office does take cognizance of these affairs byissuing special stamps to commemorate the event. Pro-ceeds from the sale of these, goes to the Post Office. Thesale of these has run to a total as high as one milliondollars on occasion. Thus, while at the 1956 Interna-tional Exhibition the Post Office did undertake the costof constructing its own facilities at the show, far frombeing subsidized the U. S. International Exhibitions haveproven a source of considerable income to the PostOffice.
