I know this letter sounds morbid but it is not intendedso. It is just that all of my life I have been careful to keepthings in order and, in view of my present health, I do wisheverything to be in order in the event that anything shouldhappen.
Sincerely yours,
Martha Smith Brown(Mrs. John King Brown)
I perused this letter with some surprise. I knewMrs. Brown merely as a client who had made a few smallpurchases, in total amount perhaps ten or twelve dollars. All of my contacts with her had been by mail for sheresided some hundreds of miles away in a distant state. In all we had exchanged possibly a dozen letters in twoyears. Always her letters had been marked with the samemeticulous explanation of her wants which marked thepresent letter. I had, from time to time, written ratherdetailed answers to some of her questions. It was heart-warming to learn that such impersonal contact had in-spired her to demonstrate so complete confidence inmyself.
