Up to this point the postal systems of the ancientsand even of the "moderns" had left no visible trace oftheir existence except through accounts of historians.There are exactly thirteen examples of Docwra's postknown to stamp collectors. Also, there are desultoryevidences of some of the previous posts like clay tabletsof Sargon's time preserved in the museums. But it wasnot until the establishment of a truly public system ofposts that we have collectible evidence in the form ofletters. More particularly, it was not until the introduc-tion of postage stamps that this evidence became ofgeneral interest throughout the civilized world.
