Is Stamp Collecting an Investment? : Page 248
The plain fact of the matter is that, from a purely finan-cial standpoint, stamps are not an investment in any realsense of the word. They may present some of the elementsof speculation, which consists of buying stamps thatpresently have a collector's value—i.e. worth to collectorsmore than their "face" value—but which you think arepriced too low. Certainly it is not an exciting speculationto purchase unused stamps at the Post Office and waitten or more years in the hops that you have guessedright.
The proponents of the "buy stamps and retire on theprofits you will make" are great shakes at pointing outthat the Ferrari collection sold for some two million dol-lars, that the Hind collection brought a million dollarsduring the world's worst depression, and that other greatcollections have been sold for large sums of money.
