the surface of each roll during the process. Upon leavingthe drying rolls the paper is completed. It may be wounddirectly upon cores or it may pass through a calendarto give it a finish before being wound on cores. But onceover the drying rolls the paper is, to all intents and pur-poses, "made." It can be further processed by convertersand various finishes applied for special purposes such as"linen finish" writing paper, "coated paper," etc.

Other than the fancy finishes which are given to thefinished or partially finished paper, the process remainsthe same and is tremendously fast. It is a worth-whilesight to visit a paper mill and watch a veritable forestbeing fed into the maw of this monster only to come outthe other end a continuous roll of paper as much as 120inches wide and traveling almost a mile a minute!
