In this instance the transfer operator,by mistake, selected the five-cent design on the transferroll. His error went undiscovered and a considerablenumber of sheets of stamps were printed and circulatedbearing these five-cent stamps in sheets of two-centdenomination before the error was discovered and theplate retired from use.
Prior to the actual laying down of the designs fromthe transfer roll as described earlier, the steel printingplate must be prepared.
