Stamp Catalogs : Page 128

The catalogs themselves will give a great deal of helpin their introductory pages, and anyone who uses a cata-log is urged to first consult these pages before attemptingto look up any particular stamp.

Minkus World Wide Catalog gives extensive back-ground data on the personages and designs on eachstamp. Enlarging portions of the stamps are used copi-ously to show important differences between similarappearing stamps. The illustrated pages from the MinkusCatalog on pages of this book will make the importanceof these features clear to any collector.

The Scott "segregated" system consists of grouping thestamps according to their various categories. Thus, forany one country, all regular postage stamps are groupedand are listed in chronological order of their issue be-ginning with the first issue as number 1. This group isfollowed by semi-postals, then by listings of all of theairmail stamps beginning again with the first issue asnumber 1. To identify these two "number l's" from eachother, a prefix letter is added to each group other thanthe regular postage issues. Thus, in the Scott Cataloguenumber "Cl" would indicate an airmail stamp, number"Jl" would indicate a postage due stamp. Various otherprefix letters are used to identify various other categoriesof stamps.
