Since 1921 the United States Post Office has main-tained a Philatelic. Agency at Washington, D.C., for thesole purpose of supplying unused postage stamps to col-lectors. In recent years these sales have amounted toover three million dollars each year. The first year of itsoperation the Agency grossed only about fifty thousanddollars! To date, the gross sales of the Agency havetotaled over fifty million dollars. This represents moneypaid at face value for postage stamps, almost all of whichwill never be put to use—a source of clear profit to thePost Office Department!
